There are many questions that people may ask as to what depitcs animal cruelty.
There are perhaps some cases of neglectwhere you will ask is this animal cruelty as the person may be treating the animal in a way that you would never treat your pet. For instance if you werer to see a dog in a backyard tethered to a wall, you would perhaps find that upsetting however it may not be against the law, depending on where you live. As long as the pet owner provides adequate food, water and shelter, they may not actually be violating any laws - which means you have to take a different approach if you want to get involved.
Try making friends with the neighbor and gently suggesting different approaches to how their animals are treated.
Lastly, if you're not sure - report it. The Animal Control or Humane Law Enforcement officers are trained to evaluate the situation.
What to do to prevent this!?!
- Make sure your pet has an ID tag or is microchipped
- Make educated decisions about who has contact with your pets
- Keep your pets indoor or safely confined within a secure, fenced in area
Mixed breed animals are often stolen and sold to research laboratories or used as "bait" by people who are training dogs to fight.
Check out your groomer or pet sitter before hand.
- Know who to contact in your area if you suspect animal abuse. You can call your local police department for the information.
- Teach your kids and other children how to treat animals and to respect them as living creatures like ourselves.
- Support the local shelter or society and get to know the work they are involved in.
- Take care of the animals you have. If you don't want kittens or puppies, spay or neuter your animals or don't let them around other animals while they are outside.
NEVER LEAVE A PET/ANIMAL IN THE HANDS OF SOMEONE YOU DO NOT TRUST!
Animal abuse is a people problem. Cruelty to animals can be prevented by all costs. Educate people you see abusing their animals and always, always report suspicious activity to your local law enforcement or animal control.
