Small Animals Basic Facts!

Small but mighty, we must not forget our Gerbil, Hamster, Guine Pigs and Mice!

As with all pets, these little ones need looking after too. If your a little unsure what to do if you find an abandoned animal like one of these, dont forget to go to our webiste on what to do next. We have put together a few basic facts about these little ones so that you are fully aware if ever you want to home one  :)

Gerbil facts

Female: Sow
Male: Boar
Young: Pups
Life span: 3-5 years
Diet: (omnivorous) 5-10 grams of feed per day

Guinea pig facts

Male: Boar
Female: Sow
Young: Pups (Piglets)
Life expectancy: 4-8 years
Diet: Herbivorous. Hay, pellet feed, fresh vegetables and wild plants, with fresh fruit as an occasional treat.

Hamster Facts

The Syrian - the largest breed of hamster, Syrian come in a variety of colours and hair lengths
The Winter White – grey with a black stripe down its back, these hamsters grow to about 8 cm. in size
The Campbell’s - similar in size to the Winter White and seen in a variety of colours
The Chinese – colours vary from brown to grey. This breed has a slightly longer tail
The Roborovski – the smallest of the breeds, Roborovskis are light brown and white

Diet: Omnivorous. 5 -10 grams of dry feed per day plus a variety of natural treats each week.

Mice facts

Mice may be small but they need plenty of space to move around in. They are also accomplished escape artists – so make sure you their tank is secure!
